Well, I don't think she should be worried about that. Although memory loss is the most common symptom of dementia, forgetfulness alone doesn't mean she has dementia. A certain extent of memory loss is just a normal part of aging.

We were seriously worried about her health. So we consulted some experts and explored some new techniques for coping. In general, caregivers try to get people with dementia back to reality through a technique called "reality orientation". But too often, those caregivers end up feeling extreme frustration as a result of trying to change the uncontrollable behaviors of those with dementia. Now many experts think should not argue with those suffering from dementia because their behaviors like wandering or asking the same questions repeatedly are caused by their damaged brain. They advise: Do not deny nor criticize whatever they say; be patient until they forget what they have said or change their minds.

Sounds tough though.

I know. But my parents say their emotional burden has been reduced a lot by following that advice.

I sure hope drugs capable of curing dementia will be developed very soon.
